BOCA RATON, Fla. – A tale of two teams captivated the fans at Grandview Preparatory as Lynn University’s volleyball team overcame a two-set deficit to knock off Saint Leo 3-2 on Sunday. Angie Caple carried the Fighting Knights to the win by logging the fifth most kills and second-highest kill percentage in program history for 25-point rally scoring. Lynn improves to 13-9 overall and 3-7 in Sunshine State Conference play.
Four players recorded double-digit kills and four more posted double-figure digs while Abbey Brokop notched a double-double with 46 assists and 13 digs.
Saint Leo (10-12, 2-8 SSC) grabbed a 2-0 set lead by taking advantage of late mistakes by the Blue & White. After a 12-12 tie in the first game, Lynn went on a 9-5 run highlighted by a monster Lizzie Raffa spike. However, that run stopped at 21-17 as the Lions scored eight straight unanswered points to win 25-21.
Michelle Jordan began the second set with four consecutive serves en route to LU grabbing a 13-8 lead. But Saint Leo, once again, went on a six-point run towards the end to win game two 26-24.
Game three started LU on the comeback trail despite nine ties and four lead changes. Holding a one-point, 15-14, lead the Fighting Knights would go on a 10-5 run, led by two Elyse Fleck kills to key a 25-19 victory. Lynn carried that momentum into the fourth set, claiming a 25-13 win without ever trailing. A 17-8 run to end the set helped the Blue & White to a fifth game and took the wind out of the Lions sails.
Although the Lions held a 1-0 advantage, the Fighting Knights battled back with six of the next eight points behind the powerful kills of Caple. Saint Leo closed the gap to 9-7 but another 6-2 run finished off SLU, with Brokop ending the match with her second, and the team’s ninth, service ace.
Caple recorded 22 kills on a .588 hitting percentage. Lynn recorded the fourth-most assists (64) and sixth-most kills (68) in program history, hitting .234 as a team. Saint Leo was held to .106 hitting and were forced into 30 attack errors.
Brianna Cox was second on the team with 14 kills, followed by Fleck with 11 and Raffa with 10. Jordan posted a team-high 16 digs while Shannon Dugan and Nikki Haben each notched 10 apiece.
