BOCA RATON, Fla. – Lynn University's first-year cross country and track coach Chris Wood has added four new runners to the roster for the upcoming 2017-18 season, as announced on Tuesday. Katie Fisher, Ally Jones, Darby Watts and Chase Yoder represent the second recruting class under Wood and will join 11 returners from last year's cross country squad.
"The overall theme with the signees for the fall is versatility," said Wood. "We tried to sign runners that are strong in the fall over 5k but also bring multiple events to the track. We will get stronger in the mid-distance as well as the longer distance track events with this group."
Plymouth, Mass. / Plymouth North High School
Fisher, an incoming runner from Plymouth, Mass., heads to Lynn after running cross country and track at Plymouth North High School. She ran her best 5k time during her junior year when she clocked a 19:10. Her best 800m time came at the Freshman/Sophomore Small School meet where she finished in second place with a time of 2:19.45. During her senior year, Fisher ran her personal-best mile time of 5:12.99 at the MIAA East D3 State Championships.
From the Coach: "Kate has done so much at the high school level, she is the ideal recruit. She will do very well in the 1500m when we get to spring track."
Chesapeake, Va. / Great Bridge High School
Jones, an incoming runner from Great Bridge High School, ran a personal-best 5k time of 19:30.49 at the VHSL 4A Conference 17 meet this year. The Chesapeake, Va., native set a personal-record 1600m time of 5:39.54 at the Grassfield Invitational and a PR in the 3200m of 12:22.06 at the Southeast District Meet 4 event.
From the Coach: "Ally loves running down to the core. There's no better way to put it, she's in it for the long run! Ally excels at cross country and more than likely will add some depth to our 5k/10k track presence."
Leesburg, Va. / Riverside High School
Watts joins the team after running cross country and track at Riverside High School. The Leesburg, Va., product has a personal-best 5k time of 19:58. She has an 18:90 PR in the 100m hurdle and a 53:04 personal-best 300m hurdle. Watts personal-best time in the 3000m is 11:53.05.
From the Coach: "Darby is a jack of all trades. She has ran 100mH [hurdles] all the way up to the two mile and she's done it all well. Darby picked up cross county in her junior year of high school and took to it immediately. She will also develop into a great cross country runner over the next couple of years."
Elmira, N.Y. / Notre Dame High School
Yoder completes this year's recruiting class and will join the team after running cross country and track all four years at Notre Dame High School. Her personal-best 5k time came at the McQuaid Invitational where she finished in second place after clocking a time of 18:56. The Elmira, N.Y., native has a 2:16.59 PR in the 800m and a personal-record time of 4:49.47 in the 1500m.
From the Coach: "Chase will be a very steady runner but her strong suit will be to push our 800m group to new levels. She has had a ton of success in the mid-distance area and we will continue to grow that here at Lynn."
